silent antagonists VS regular antagonists

Image
I recently watched Halloween  and one of the most scary things about Michael Myers is the fact that he never speaks during the entire film this makes him scary because it means that the viewer never has even an inkling towards what is going on in his horrible mind he could have a masterplan for how to dispatch each victim he may have constant visions of murder but its left up to the viewers imagination making him much scarier. The opposite can be true of a villain each step of the way the viewer knows the villain is ahead of the hero filling them with dread or it could show his vast intelligence or it could even just be used to say we have more guns than you each one can make the villain better but of course there are examples which get it wrong... 1. Friday the 13th part 1  this isn't the worst example of this with the murderer quietly killing throughout 90% of the film until near the end where she starts to exposit to the last remaining person why she is murdering thes...

The problem with some video game movies

Image
On the surface video game movies are a good concept because you've already got a plot, characters and an environment which is in theory everything you need. But Hollywood has proven this theory wrong many times with many of them haemorrhaging money for the studio. This isn't because they're all bad I personally enjoyed Hitman: Agent 47 and Resident evil  but the biggest mistake is control. Very simply if you play a video game it could have virtually the same plot to dozens of movies but you control what the character does and since these are generally advertised towards the people who played the games the control is gone and it's just not the same. This I think is the biggest problem with them there are other problems but I'll get to them later. First I want to have a look at 2 films which tried to solve this problem 1. This film tried to solve this by still putting you in a fairly generic plot but this time it's first person by this I mean they literally mount...

The length of music in 2020

Yesterday I was listening to a song called twilight zone by Golden Earrings which I had heard on a Dutch rock radio station. This sparked a thought an 8 minute song was being played in another country on a genre specific station and it was in English. This struck me because there are many many radio stations which play either genre specific or songs from the past yet the next day when i tuned in to some for a fun test I found that none of them played a song over 3-4 mins which is the average length of a song admittedly I didn't have enough time or resources to see if I just listened at an unrepresentative time but even then it did solidify my belief in something: That certain genres mainly other than pop have longer songs. on the surface this may seem obvious jazz has a free flow structure so may run longer classical and opera can go on for longer periods especially if played in totality and rock and heavy metal in some places have whole sections of songs just dedicated to instrum...

what is the future of horror movies?

Image
I have high hopes for the future of horror movies more and more good horror films have been coming out such as Hereditary, Get out and a lonely place to die. the reason I think this is so exciting is because horror has been one of the worst film genres for years not to say there haven't been good ones but they are few and far between. Entire franchises of horror films have grown even though the scripts were clearly written by baboons. To explain my grievances and hopes fully I'm going to go back to the early 2000's Saw, the ring and the Blair witch project came out in 2002, 2004 and 1999 respectively. I'm gonna start with SAW. Saw while being a good film as a psychological horror, gore and a twist ending was one of the first films to start a bad trend Saw, Hostel, final destination and other films started the idea that if you're horror film has gore or a twist ending its a scary film this is wrong gore while it can be entertaining isn't scary its gross with lat...

Thoughts on the Tobey Maguire Spiderman trilogy

Image
The Tobey Maguire trilogy is my favourite set of Spiderman films. So lets go through them one by one obviously the first one is: Spiderman This film could've been better for me at least if there hadn't been 2 other Spiderman film series (starring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland respectively) which i watched first as when Spiderman 3 came out i was 3 so obviously I ended up watching the Andrew Garfield's films first which are underrated. then i ended up watching the Tom Holland ones which came out with the Marvel cinematic universe. this as well as my knowledge of comics and T.V. meant that when i got round to the Tobey Maguire ones I had already gone through the origin story a dozen times which damaged the story. The next fault with the first one is the cheesiness of it which is due to 2 things it being based off of a comic and the fact that was much more prevalent in the early 2000s. the only other problem with it is personally I don't think Tobey Maguire and Kirsten ...

thoughts on Ghosts of Tsushima

Image
Ghosts of Tsushima follows Jin as he goes through the most generic plot in the history of the universe. I could've fucking written the story for this. He loses his home has to save family member from evil invading forces has to band together with people like Yuna a thief in process doesn't stick to samurai code. Uncle is freed but is pissed Jin didn't stick to the samurai code but doesn't understand he did it to save his home. I will not spoil the ending as it isn't quite what I was expecting apart from the sequel baity bit. One of the reasons the main story is lacking is because the side content is meant to bring it all up by adding character depth and make the universe feel more lived in. the main side quests are ones where you meet up with a companion from the main story like Norio for example then over multiple missions you seek revenge on the one who wronged them. instead of adding depth they all end up angry flawed characters but then when you go into main mi...
