 Westerns were the most popular genre in America in the 50's and 60's but unlike other genres have never been able to make a real comeback and there are a few reasons for that but I have a theory in real life the "western era" was a relatively short period of time only lasting around 30 years which leads to western productions whether intentional or not sometimes looking uninspired or copied because unlike with other genres say first world war films westerns almost always had the same story track even making certain actors famous for mainly playing western roles like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood combined they have made 162 westerns this causes a big problem if a genre which for decades has been dominated by very similar story threads and actors when people want something different there isn't alot of places to go. obviously writers still went different places with westerns but there was mixed success too different poo western too similar unoriginal.  Next there i...

 character survival in franchises is a difficult thing to manage because kill too many characters your film loses its heart kill too few and all danger shown on screen is moot because no-one is gonna die.  A while ago I watched The Burbs a 1989 Horror, Mystery film starring Tom Hanks it starts quite well with some surprisingly good music used just to set the scene. But it quickly devolves into a confusing mess the plot isn't confusing mind you but style wise it is a mess. it has 2 big problems the first one is balancing/consistency now horror comedies can be good The cabin in the woods for example is a great meta commentary on horror films in general but it is difficult as comedy and horror are just innately different genres to make it work though you have to haver a balance otherwise it stops being a horror film or a comedy film and just goes into the other genre until the script remembers its got to be both pulling the viewer out in this film you're likely to get cinematic whiplash.  No I'm not out of ideas even if it looks like that I just thought it would be cool to put up but then I realised it only applies to me and it is just a list after all so analysis then its back to your irregularly scheduled content.  I recently watched Halloween  and one of the most scary things about Michael Myers is the fact that he never speaks during the entire film this makes him scary because it means that the viewer never has even an inkling towards what is going on in his horrible mind he could have a masterplan for how to dispatch each victim he may have constant visions of murder but its left up to the viewers imagination making him much scarier. The opposite can be true of a villain each step of the way the viewer knows the villain is ahead of the hero filling them with dread or it could show his vast intelligence or it could even just be used to say we have more guns than you each one can make the villain better but of course there are examples which get it wrong... 1.  On the surface video game movies are a good concept because you've already got a plot, characters and an environment which is in theory everything you need. But Hollywood has proven this theory wrong many times with many of them haemorrhaging money for the studio. This isn't because they're all bad I personally enjoyed Hitman: Agent 47 and Resident evil  but the biggest mistake is control. Very simply if you play a video game it could have virtually the same plot to dozens of movies but you control what the character does and since these are generally advertised towards the people who played the games the control is gone and it's just not the same.  Yesterday I was listening to a song called twilight zone by Golden Earrings which I had heard on a Dutch rock radio station. This sparked a thought an 8 minute song was being played in another country on a genre specific station and it was in English. This struck me because there are many many radio stations which play either genre specific or songs from the past yet the next day when i tuned in to some for a fun test I found that none of them played a song over 3-4 mins which is the average length of a song admittedly I didn't have enough time or resources to see if I just listened at an unrepresentative time but even then it did solidify my belief in something: That certain genres mainly other than pop have longer songs. on the surface this may seem obvious jazz has a free flow structure so may run longer classical and opera can go on for longer periods especially if played in totality and rock and heavy metal in some places have whole sections of songs just dedicated to instrum...

 I have high hopes for the future of horror movies more and more good horror films have been coming out such as Hereditary, Get out and a lonely place to die. the reason I think this is so exciting is because horror has been one of the worst film genres for years not to say there haven't been good ones but they are few and far between. Entire franchises of horror films have grown even though the scripts were clearly written by baboons.
